Licinia Eudocia is returning to Rome in violation of her exile. She has come in secret to conspire with her mother-in-law to unseat her husband, the ineffectual Emperor Valentinian III. To make this happen she will need the cooperation of the Emperor’s chief advisor and righthand man Petronius Maximus, one of the wealthiest men in Rome, and one of the most dangerous.

Maximus agrees to help her, but on one condition. He must be given supreme command of the Roman military, supplanting the imposing general Flavius Aetius, the man whose strategic genius has saved Rome again and again. When Licinia balks, Petronius Maximus turns against her, setting in train a series of events that culminates in war, invasion, and upheaval.

The Desecration of Fortune tells the story of the final years leading up the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, a time of division and strife exacerbated by rivalries and betrayals within the House of Theodosius, Rome’s ruling dynasty. The resulting instability makes the Empire vulnerable to invasions from without and overthrow from within. Licinia Eudocia soon finds herself drawn into a maelstrom of crises, among them the Siege of Orleans, the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, and a potentially lethal encounter with Attila the Hun.

But Licinia’s greatest conflict is with Petronius Maximus who has been plotting to overthrow her husband and seize the throne for himself. To stop him she must rely on a mysterious amulet that imparts a strange power that may be turning her into someone she doesn’t want to be, a woman without scruples who will stop at nothing to save the Empire from destruction.
