My novels about the Fall of the Roman Empire require a lot of detailed research. Accuracy is important to me, and I strive to answer any objections as to authenticity before they arise. To that end, resources like the breathtaking videos provided by History in 3D are all-important.
Ancient Rome in 3D is a stunning flyover view of Rome as it appeared in the 4th-century CE, about 100 years before the events of my stories take place. Here I can see what the Forum would have looked like to Licinia and her two daughters as they fled the Vandals in my novel "The Desecration of Fortune". Here I can see what the backstreets behind the Colosseum would have looked like to Galla Placidia as she hid her children from the Goths in "The Wind in the Embers."
As a measure of the accuracy of this video take a look at the statues lining the rooftop of the Basilica Julia on the right as you enter the Forum. They are painted in vivid colors, as are the friezes inside the Arch of Titus. Many people think Roman marble statuary has always been white. Yet such was not the case in the 4th century. Most marble statues were painted in vivid, lifelike colors. The course of years flaked the paint away, leaving the bare white marble we see today.
